How Difficult Can This Be?

The FAT city workshop:

Learning disabilities are one of the challenges faced by many of the students you are working with.  People have many preconceptions about exactly what learning disabilities are and how they effect a student’s ability to be successful.  I have embedded a classic video produced by David Lavoie to help you explore this issue.  The presenter tries to give the viewer the experience of what it is like to have a learning disability and the kinds of difficulties these students experience in the classroom.  The information provided is certainly applicable to all students and may change your perspective around the students you work with.  The video is 70 minutes long and includes a discussion panel at the end.

Assignment: Reflect on how you felt while watching “The F.A.T. City Workshop” and respond to the following.  What did you know about learning disabilities before watching the video?  After watching it do you feel that you had any misconceptions about learning disabilities?  What challenges have you discovered that learning disabled students face?  What strategies will you aim at using when working with students?

An effective response will have a minimum of 300 words.  You should give a minimum of four different kinds of challenges faced by learning disabled students and three strategies you can use.  Include specific details and examples where appropriate.  Submit by email or on paper.
