They say that you learn more about a topic when you have to teach it. You will choose one of the topics below, read about it, and then you will prepare a lesson to teach the information to our class. Your lesson should be at least 10 minutes long and include some kind of activity, short assignment or quiz for the class to do to go along with your lesson. If you choose to create a short assignment or quiz, you will need to provide an answer key. If you create an activity, you may need to provide an instruction sheet.

Click on this link to access an interactive module on The Rights and Responsibilities for New and Young Workers. It’s not set up the greatest (for example, it will ask you questions based on information it gives you but after you answer, it won’t give you the correct answer?!) but the information provided in the module is still good so it’s still worthwhile. Please go through the online module. You will be given a quiz after everyone is finished the module. For the questions and quiz they give you throughout the module and at the end, after you see the question, go back to the information and find out what the answer is before you go on to the next section.

Compatibility Check Function – allows you to check your compatibility with of the career matches generated for your profile. To see how this works, you will check your compatibility for 3 potential careers. To do this, go to “Who Am I” and then select “Match Results” to get the list of occupations matched to your profile. Choose 2 out of the 10 careers that you found intriguing (previously added to you About Me portfolio), “favourite” them by clicking on the heart on the image for that career, and then click on “Get Started” to start the compatibility check (you can do a compatibility check for all 10 if you want but you are only required to do 2).

Research Different Pathways to a Career – here is a copy of the worksheet for this part of the assignment. You will need to download it (it’s a Word file), do research on MyBlueprint (instructions below) and then fill in the answers electronically on the worksheet. Due date: Friday, November 16.

To start, go to “Post Secondary” which is two links below “Who Am I” on the main menu. You have a choice of Apprenticeship, College & University, and Workplace. You will explore all three, starting with Apprenticeship.

Click on Apprenticeship. Search for specific apprenticeships or scroll down for a list of suggested Apprenticeships. Choose two that catch your interest and complete the worksheet to compare. Favourite your chosen apprenticeships.

Once finished this section, go on to Post-secondary – College & University. Search for specific programs (Ex. “business”) or scroll down for a list of suggested programs. Select two that catch your interest. Complete the worksheet. Favourite your two chosen colleges/universities.

Finally, go to Post-secondary – Workplace. Search for specific jobs (Ex. “cashier”) or scroll down for a list of suggested workplaces. As with the other pathways, select two that catch your interest and complete the worksheet questions using the two workplaces you have chosen. Favourite your two chosen workplaces.

Once you have completed the worksheet, save it (either on your Home drive or your OneDrive), naming it “Pathways_FirstName_LastName”.

Go to your Dashboard on MyBlueprint and scroll down to see the 6 boxes (above) that you favourited. Click on each one and add them to your portfolio called “Career and Education Opportunities”. Then in this portfolio, add a Journal box, title it, upload your “Pathways” file that you just saved, and then write a paragraph which includes answers to the following questions:

a. Which post-secondary pathway did you feel best met your interests, values and personality?
b. Why did you choose this pathway?
c. What steps might you take in order to pursue your post-secondary opportunity of choice?

31 Oct 2018

Once you have finished all of the instructions from the Oct 23 post (below), please do the following:

1 – Go to your “About Me” Portfolio and add three Journal boxes:  a) one titled “Who Am I?”. Upload a picture or video of something that best describes who you are; b) one titled “What Makes Me Happy?”. Upload a picture or video of something that symbolizes what makes you happy; c) one titled “What Am I Passionate About?”. Upload a picture or video that shows what your passion is. Each box should have a short description of your picture or video. After you have posted each box to your “About Me” Portfolio, write a reflection describing why you chose that particular picture/video and why it is important to you. **Please note – when you are uploading the picture or video, choose “file”, not “picture” or “video” because these may not work.**

It is good to set goals for yourself. Go to this link https://positivepsychologyprogram.com/life-worth-living-setting-life-goals/ and read two of the articles contained here:
Edwin Locke: Theory About Setting Goals In Life
10 Reasons For Setting Future Goals

You will have likely learned previously about the importance of setting “S.M.A.R.T.” goals — that is, goals that are “Specific”, “Measurable”, “Attainable”, “Realistic” and “Time-Based”. Go to this link https://www.smart-goals-guide.com/smart-goal-setting.html for a refresher of what SMART goals are and some good examples of what a SMART goal might look like.

2 – Go to “Home” and “Goals” and add two goals:  one academic goal for the short term (0-6 months) and one other goal of your choice, also for the short term (0-6 months). Set your sights on achieving these goals by the end of Term 2. You must include at least 3 tasks attached to each goal. These tasks will be things you will do in order to support your achievement of these goals. The goals and the tasks should all be “SMART”.

3 – Once you have completed both goals, add them to your “About Me” Portfolio. You can do this by going to your About Me portfolio, select “Add Box”, then select “Add From MyBlueprint”. You will see a page of all boxes you have created in MyBlueprint. Choose your two goals here and they will be moved to your About Me portfolio.

Think about who you want to become. Not in terms of a career but in terms of the qualities and positive traits you would like to develop in yourself. These relate to your values and what you feel is most important in life. Watch a couple of the following videos to get inspiration and get you thinking about characteristics that you admire. (use your ear phones)
Steve Jobs Commencement Speech
Cameron Russell Ted Talk
Carol Dweck – The Power of Believing You Can Improve
Danny MacAskill

4 – Go to your About Me portfolio and add a Media file – a picture or a video of something that best describes who you want to become in terms of a character strength, not an occupation. Give this box the title Who Do I Want to Become and then add a short description of your picture or video. Then write a reflection of why you chose this picture or video.

5 – Go to your About Me portfolio and add a Journal Box. Upload a picture of someone you admire. It could be a figure in history, it could be a family member, it could be a celebrity, it could be an athlete, etc. Give this box the title Someone I Admire and write a short description of the person you chose. After you post it, write a reflection about the qualities and characteristics you admire about this person and what this person does that demonstrates these qualities and characteristics.

  • Learning Styles – were you surprised with the results? how will knowing this information help you in school? how will it help you in life?
  • Personality – what do you think your most valuable personality trait is? why? And Why is it important to understand your personality type? How will it help you in school? how will it help you in life?

– what did you learn about yourself, if anything, through these tools
– do you strongly disagree with any of the results from any of these tools? why?
– was there trait/characteristic/description that you agree with but feel you want to change in yourself? If yes, how do you think you can work on changing them?
