Workplace Safety

ASSIGNMENT
The Workplace Safety Assignment is comprised of two assignments and both assignments are mandatory.

Assignment #1 – Read the Safety Orientation Handout and then print and complete the Quiz.  Please submit the quiz to Ms. James’ mailbox.

WorkSafeBC considers Young Workers as people 15-24 years old. YOU fall into this age group and as a young worker, you:
– Have a desire to impress and not be seen as someone who doesn’t knwo what they are doing
– Are less likely to ask for help or to question unsafe procedures at work
– Are often not given very thorough safety training
– Are less likely to trust your gut feelings if asked to do something that is unsafe.

You should know that you have rights as an employee:

  • Right to a healthy and safe workplace
  • Right to safety training and orientation
  • Right to refuse unsafe work

Assignment #2 – Go to one of the following webpages, watch the video and answer the questions on this Handout. (Warning – some parts of some of the videos are graphic and may be disturbing to watch).  Please submit your assignment to Ms. James’ mailbox.

Josh Dueck – Skiing accident while working to prepare the site for the Canadian Junior Nationals Ski Competition
Matthew Bowcott – Kitchen accident involving hot oil while working as a new cook
Michael Lovett – Sawmill accident where his leg got caught in heavy machinery
Nick Perry – Lumberyard accident involving over 2000 lbs of loose wood sheets falling on him
